Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI He was buried on January 5, 2023 in the Vatican, in a ceremony presided over by his predecessor Pope francesco. The pontiff emeritus passed away on December 31, 2022 in Vatican City at the age of 85. Joseph Alois Ratzinger in Germany, he made history when he resigned as pope in 2013, becoming the first pope in 600 years to resign before his death.

The funeral was attended by some 50,000 mourners in the heart of Vatican City, according to the church. His coffin was carried through St. Peter’s Square to the Vatican, where he was buried in a “simple” service at 10am local time. In agreement with anyway, the service was close to funeral traditions for the death of a reigning pope, but with some minor modifications.

Pope Francis’ homily for Pope Benedict XVI was a tribute to his enduring faith. In agreement with Cnn, he told the faithful, “God’s faithful people, gathered here, now accompany him and entrust him with the life of the one who was their shepherd. Like the women in the tomb, we too come with the scent of gratitude and the balm of hope, to show you once again the love that never dies. We want to do it with the same wisdom, tenderness and devotion that you have given us over the years. Together we want to say: ‘Father, into your hands we entrust his spirit’.

And he added: “Benedict, faithful friend of the Bridegroom, may your joy be complete when you hear your voice, now and always.”

People would certainly pay homage to the Pope. During the procession of the coffin towards St. Peter’s Basilica, the crowd was heard chanting the “Santo Subito”, an appeal for the deceased Benedict to be sanctified.
