There was actually a titanic romance, and it’s a beautiful one

Everyone knows it, Jack and Rose are born from James Cameron’s imagination. But one touching scene is inspired by a real couple, that’s what.

Originally released in December 2017

In 1907, a man named Joseph Bruce Ismay launched the initiative to build an ocean liner called the Titanic, with watertight compartments, so that the ship is as safe as possible in case of water infiltration.

(Now that’s when everyone says, “That worked out great!”)

Obviously, the rest, you probably know very well (spoiler alert?), the vessel was wrecked after the hull struck an iceberg (he’s the villain of the story), and since there weren’t enough lifeboats on board, a thousand people drowned.

Great atmosphere.

The story inspired James Cameron who made it into a film (ah yes?), but above all a love story.

The love story Jack/Rose may originally have been pure fiction, but as one might expect, there were real romantic liaisons aboard the Titanic.

Including that of this couple we know today.

Do you remember this scene?

You can click, will direct you directly at the right time. Nobody wants to (re)suffer all these painful 2:53.

The moment we see the two old men side by side in a bed, waiting for the wave to take them away, it is actually based on a true story.

In 1912, when the disaster struck, Isidor Straus and Rosalie Ida Straus were two passengers accommodated in one of the richest compartments of the liner, because Isidor was an American congressman and co-owner of a sign called Macy’s.

According to this article by THE Biblethe couple had been married for forty years and had returned to America after a stay in France.

When the tragedy happened, Ida would have refused to take a seat in a canoe, preferring to stay with Isidor who was responsible for helping other passengers and trying to save as many lives as possible.

As for Isidor, his special status would also allow him to get a job, but he would he preferred to be with his peers and so don’t run away.

Today the two lovers each have their own Wikipedia (Ida’s from which the photo comes and Isidor’s), to learn a little more about their person and their story.

One thing is certain: here I am moved in the heartespecially since the above scene marked me deeply and still marks me every time.
