Dilley was praised on Twitter after he shared a photo of his injured knee and leg after eventually reporting the robber to the Metropolitan Police.

“A man on a bike just HAPPENED and stole my iPhone out of my hand,” he wrote on Twitter at around 07:00 GMT (23:00 PST) yesterday morning. “Wrong blind, wrong day. I jumped on him [he was] kept safe and I got my phone back.”

Dilley later explained that he immediately gave chase after he felt his phone being taken from him. He held the robber for a while but let him go on the condition that he leave immediately while another person came to the rescue.

Dilley dismissed criticism that his actions were criminal, citing British law that allows a member of the public to “arrest where they suspect a serious criminal act is taking place”, although he stressed that she own actions “are stupid”. ‘ and advised others in his position to call the police immediately.

London’s Metropolitan Police are now investigating the incident as an attempted robbery and are appealing for witnesses to what happened in central London, just outside the BBC’s headquarters.

Dilley is a successful BBC news correspondent, writing and presenting on a range of subjects and directing the BBC’s Reframing Disability Programme.
