‘I hope I don’t find any bodies!’: Sailors find ‘ghost ship’ floating in Atlantic hundreds of miles from Bermuda and are terrified as they board

A sailor has shared new footage of the moment he encountered a ghostly “ghost ship” 800 miles off Bermuda, with no crew or passengers on board.

Matt Rutherford and his colleague from the Ocean Research Project found the abandoned boat and were immediately concerned that something terrible had happened to the crew on board.

The incredible vision of Mr. Rutherford scouting the boat as it floats through the Atlantic appeared just five days ago.

In the video, the sailors saw that the sail was not on the boat and appeared to be acting “strangely” in the distance. Upon closer inspection, the duo found that “no one was in sight” and that the engine was not running.

“I have no idea what’s in there, I’ll look around and hope I don’t find any bodies or anything.”

On board, the boat appeared to have been abandoned in a hurry, with clothes and personal belongings strewn about the cabin.

“No bodies, thank God,” he said.

“By the way, that’s really crazy. 800 miles from Bermuda, 2,400 miles from the USA, on a very nice Swan 48 in the middle of the ocean.’

Mr Rutherford said in a previous 2013 scouting podcast that he was “half expecting someone to lift their head and say hello”, but he felt he had to scout in case someone on board was injured.

“Parts of the ceiling fell in places, some drawers burst open, you could hear the water lapping. It was just the scariest thing. It looked crazy like people left it somewhere in the middle.”

After driving about 50 miles, they found it was impossible to go any further and had to cut the wolf dog loose.

The video was shared on YouTube five days ago and has caught the attention of online detectives who believe the boat was driven by Alan McGettigan of the Royal Irish Yacht Club.

Mr McGettigan and his crew made headlines in 2013 when they were rescued 400 miles off the Delaware coast while traveling to Bermuda and Antigua.

At the time, it was reported that the yacht had suffered “knockdown” and was damaged by mechanical faults.

The crew made a distress call and were rescued by a Greek cargo ship.

Mr. Rutherford, who often shared his daring adventures online, was the first man to sail solo across America without stopping.

He is considered by many to be a “legend” within the sailing community.
