Russian forces launched ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv around midnight on August 20, injuring at least four people and hitting a children's hospital.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that the nighttime bombardment caused damage and fires across three districts of the Ukrainian capital. Debris from an intercepted missile fell near a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district, shattering windows and starting a blaze.
Preliminary reports indicated that residents became trapped inside an air raid shelter in Solomianskyi during the attack. Emergency medical crews were dispatched to the scene, where damage was also recorded at a local children's hospital.
Klitschko reported that windows were blown out at the hospital facility and several vehicles caught fire on the hospital grounds. Medics were also called to the Darnnytskyi district, where fires broke out at non-residential structures.
In the Sviatoshynskyi district, warehouse facilities caught fire and non-residential premises suffered structural destruction. By 12:55 a.m., emergency services confirmed that four casualties had been recorded across the city.
Damage reported across three districts
The Ukrainian Air Force first alerted residents to incoming Russian ballistic missiles heading toward the capital at 11:53 p.m. Military monitors reported additional missile movements over the following minutes, issuing their final ballistic warning at 12:12 a.m.
Solomianskyi is an urban district located in western Kyiv, while Darnnytskyi sits on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. Sviatoshynskyi lies in the western suburbs of the capital, which has a population of nearly three million people.
Klitschko, a former world heavyweight boxing champion, has served as the mayor of Kyiv since 2014. He has regularly issued updates on emergency operations and municipal infrastructure during missile strikes on the capital.
Air defense challenges and widespread alerts
The latest attack occurred as Ukrainian forces face increasing difficulty intercepting ballistic missiles due to a critical shortage of air defense ammunition. On August 12, an Air Force spokesperson stated that Ukraine had no missiles left for its American-made Patriot air defense systems.
Air raid sirens sounded across Kyiv city and the surrounding region during the attack. Alerts were also activated in 14 other regions, including Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Kirovohrad.
At 1:00 a.m., military authorities declared a new missile threat for Odesa Oblast following launches of Kalibr cruise missiles. The Air Force reported that another missile was moving through Kherson Oblast toward Mykolaiv Oblast before heading north into Kirovohrad Oblast.
