Peruvian volleyball captain Karla Ortiz has officially announced her retirement from the Peru national volleyball team after more than two decades representing the country.
The 34-year-old outside hitter shared the decision in a social media message, confirming the end of her long international career wearing the national team red-and-white jersey.
Addressing supporters, Ortiz said she had never imagined the day would arrive when she would say goodbye to the national shirt. She noted that representing Peru brought her immense joy as well as important personal lessons during times of defeat.
Ortiz explained that she is closing a wonderful stage of her life to make room for new personal and professional projects. She expressed deep gratitude to every coach who guided her athletic and personal growth throughout her time in the national program.
She also paid tribute to her teammates, whom she described as sisters and friends, thanking them for working together every day toward the shared dream of elevating the national team to the highest level.
Urging supporters never to doubt her love for Peru or the sport that gave her everything, Ortiz concluded her message with a full heart, offering words of encouragement for the squad as they aim to qualify for the World Championship.
Career with the national team
At 34, Ortiz steps down as the final active member of the Peruvian squad that competed at the 2010 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship in Japan. The national team, commonly known as the Blanquirroja in reference to the colors of the Peruvian flag, represents one of South America's most historic volleyball programs.
Throughout her two decades with the national side, Ortiz established herself as an essential figure on the court through her offensive power and extensive international experience. Beyond her technical contributions, she served as the undisputed locker room leader and a model of resilience for young prospects joining the squad.
Club career with Universitario de Deportes
Although Ortiz is stepping away from international competition, she will not leave the sport entirely and plans to continue her career at club level.
The veteran attacker has renewed her contract with sports club Universitario de Deportes for the upcoming Liga Nacional de Vóley season, Peru's top domestic competition. Ortiz stated that her primary objective for the campaign is to fight for the national league title and continue bringing success to the club's supporters.
