Actors Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie have joined the cast of 'Más que rivales' for its upcoming second season, production of which is now underway. The news follows a request from the show's creator asking fans not to approach the filming location.
U.S. media outlets Deadline and Variety first reported that Smith and Gillespie will appear in the Movistar Plus+ series. Smith recently starred in the third installment of the 'Now You See Me' film franchise.
Smith will play Harris Drover, while Gillespie will portray Troy Barrett. Both figures originate from 'Role Model', the fifth book in the 'Game Changers' series by author Rachel Reid, which serves as the basis for the television adaptation.
In the story, Barrett is a hockey player on Ilya Rozanov's team who has a history of school bullying. Drover works as the team's cheerful social media manager.
New character details and casting
Executive producers Tierney and Brendan Brady described both characters as complex and fascinating figures who easily earn empathy. They said they knew from the start they were seeking actors capable of creating something special together and bringing depth and emotion to the screen.
The producers added that Smith and Gillespie achieved this goal perfectly. They said both actors connected immediately with the vulnerability and resilience of Harris and Troy, showing an instinctive understanding of the characters.
Season two storyline changes
The new episodes will adapt 'The Long Game', the sixth volume in Reid's book series. Showrunner Jacob Tierney said the plot will feature a ten-year time jump, rejoining the main characters at a critical point in their relationship.
Tierney stated that he seeks to avoid sensationalist melodrama in the new season. The narrative will explore the strain on a couple who have kept their love secret for a decade.
Conflict will center on differing goals, as Ilya wishes to make his orientation public while Shane fears the professional repercussions within elite hockey.
