Tracey Emin shares graphic photo of her stoma to raise awareness after battling bladder cancer

Artist Tracey Emin shared a graphic photo of her stoma to raise awareness about disabled life after her battle with cancer.

The 58-year-old actress underwent a series of major surgeries in 2020 after being diagnosed with an aggressive bladder cancer during the blockade.

Doctors removed her bladder, urethra, lymph nodes, and part of her intestines and vagina to prevent the cancer from spreading.

An ostomy bag, an opening on the abdomen, was given to the patient so that the urine could be drained from the body and drained through a urostomy bag.

Emin is candid about adjusting to life after surgery and often shares candid updates about his health on social media.

In an Instagram post today, she wrote: “This is my stoma. Most people have never seen it. Something I have to keep forever.

“It’s the part of my gut that’s attached to the outside of my body. I will die without it being there and not working properly.’

†[It’s] live meat. Fragile and sensitive. It is surrounded by scar tissue and swollen, swollen fatty flesh.

“I have almost complete muscle loss in my stomach, my stomach. My body will never be the same again.

“Honestly, I find it pretty depressing to carry the bag. There’s nothing better than carrying a sack of shit.

“But this life… it’s my life now. Many handicaps are invisible. But I thought I’d show you mine.

Emin’s followers were filled with praise and encouragement in the comment section, with actor Russell Tovey responding, “Always a lot of love and admiration for you.”

What is a stoma?

A stoma is an opening in the abdomen that connects to the body’s urinary system.

It is applied to patients to ensure that waste products are removed from the body and discharged from the outside.

Surgery is performed on patients who cannot use their bladder fully.

A removable pouch, also called the urostomy pouch, is connected to the stoma via a tube.

It collects urine and needs to be emptied manually.

GQ editor Dylan Jones wrote: “So powerful, so important, so moving x”.

“You are strong and beautiful by sending love to Tracy,” said British designer Alice Temperly.

Last month, Emin explained to his 94,000 Instagram followers how difficult it is to fly overseas with a urostomy.

“Traveling with a urostomy bag is a handicap… You have no control over when it gets full and when you need a bath,” she wrote, mocking herself.

“If the bag comes out or comes out… It could be a disaster… the urine explodes all over the place.”

When the artist announced her cancer in late 2020, she explained that she was first diagnosed during the coronavirus blockade and underwent surgery in the summer.

Emin was diagnosed with very aggressive squamous cell cancer, and surgeons feared that if it spread to his lymph nodes it would kill him within a few months.

As a result, it was decided to remove not only the bladder, but also the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, lymph nodes, urethra and part of the colon and vagina.

Emin said that before the surgery that summer, he had stood up for 24 hours with his lawyer who rewrote his will, and sent 70 friends an e-mail explaining his cancer and said, “Don’t contact me.”

Emin likened his surgeries to child or gender reassignment surgery. She also revealed that she was working on a picture of a malignant lump before doctors discovered bladder cancer.

One of the most famous British artists of his generation, Emin is famous for his work My Bed, which has a record of several days spent in bed with depression.

The bed is unmade and the sheets are stained, while the floor has miscellaneous items such as condoms, birth control pills, menstrual bloody underwear, money and cigarette butts.

The work was nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 and received mixed reviews from the public and the press.

He was one of the so-called Young British Artists to appear in the 1990s with Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas.

His next exhibition, Journey to Death, opens from April 24 to June 19 at the Carl Freedman Gallery in Margate, Kent.
