One study suggests that following Joe Wicks’ brutal exercise regimen is truly the best way to lose weight.
The nation’s favorite workout guru, nicknamed The Body Coach, is an advocate of trendy high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
It burns sweat by forcing people to do burpees, squats, and push-ups, alternating with rest breaks.
However, experts have confirmed that it is more effective at keeping the waist under control than traditional aerobic exercises such as running or swimming.
Researchers say that just three 30-minute sessions a week can turn your body into a “fat burning machine” and work better in obese people.
According to an international team of researchers, those who do intense interval training each week burn up to 0.13 g more fat per minute of physical activity than those who do not exercise. Exercises that replace burpees, squats, and push-ups with rest were popularized by Joe Wicks (pictured), who uploaded a video online as a Body Coach.
HOW TO GET HEALTH THROUGH EXERCISE?
Adults are encouraged to do some form of physical activity every day. Exercising just once or twice a week can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke.
Those over 18 should aim for:
- Do strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms) at least two days a week. This includes heavy shopping bags, yoga, pilates and weight lifting.
- Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. Moderate activity includes brisk walking, cycling, dancing and double tennis. Intense activity includes running, swimming, and cycling fast or uphill.
- Spread the exercise evenly over four or five days a week, or every day
- Reduce time spent sitting or lying down and stop prolonged inactivity with any activity
Adults can also reach their weekly activity goal with:
- Several short sessions of very intense intensity. This includes heavy lifting, circuit training, and hill sprinting.
- A mix of medium-intensity, vigorous and very vigorous activity

They still encourage people to stick with other traditional forms of sweating.
Although the Victoria University Melbourne team encourages people to become HIIT fanatics.
Their calculations show that adding three rapid fire sessions per week can help burn an extra 0.13g of fat per minute of exercise.
Over the course of ten years, those who do the recommended two and a half hours of aerobics could theoretically lose another 10 kg.
“If you’re not doing it yet, maybe you should try it,” said Professor Zeljko Pedisic, author of the study.
Numerous studies have shown that HIIT stimulates fat oxidation, the process of breaking down stored fat in the body.
But until now, researchers had not compared the fat oxidation rates of HIIT exercisers to other forms of exercise.
To investigate, the researchers pooled the results of 18 studies, each of which looked at the amount of fat burned during exercise.
Approximately 511 participants participated or did not train in supervised training (HIIT or moderate-intensity activities such as running and cycling).
They were followed in three sessions per week for two to fourteen weeks.
Results, published in the British Journal o Sport Medicine, show that just four weeks of HIIT training increased fat burning by an additional 0.08 grams per minute compared to those who did not exercise.
People who prefer traditional aerobic exercises such as running will also experience an improvement in fat metabolism.
But the benefit was less than those who took HIIT (0.03g per minute), the results showed.
This means fans of aerobic exercise will have to train longer to see the same effects, the team said.
The researchers acknowledged that their results were not foolproof, as they included studies in different populations using different training methods.
And they tracked the effects for just three months.
