Cotton swab revolution: New method drastically reduces time to endometriosis diagnosis

A new Pap smear is said to offer hope to women suffering from a painful chronic condition that can lead to infertility.

Endometriosis causes severe discomfort in the ovaries and other parts of the body and took an average of eight years to be diagnosed in the UK.

However, the revolutionary Pap smear test only takes four weeks to give a result, allowing early treatment and reducing the chance of infertility.

It was developed using micro-RNA, the same science used in the production of Covid vaccines.

Endometriosis causes cells similar to the lining of the uterus to grow in other parts of the body, often causing severe pain.

The swab test will be available privately in the UK this month for around £1,000. However, there is hope that it will be rolled out across the NHS.

Jo Sinclair, from patient support organization Fertility First, said: “This is a very small investment for the NHS compared to the years of misery that many women endure.”
