The suicide rate among American teens increased in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, one study shows, but the number declined among adults.
Researchers led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston found that there were 903 suicides between the ages of 10 and 19 in 14 states in 2020, an 8% increase from the average of 835 suicides over the past five years.
By comparison, the number of recorded suicides fell 2% in the first year of Covid, down from 14,200 before to 13,900.
Scientists have warned that it may have fueled voter turnout for youth battling death after losing their parents and grandparents to Covid. They asked for more money for funeral services for children.
The United States has recorded nearly one million deaths from Covid since March 2020, which is more than any other country in the world.
Researchers led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found that there were 903 suicides between the ages of 10 and 19 in 14 states in 2020, an 8% increase from the average of 835 suicides (shown above) over the past five years.

Indiana saw the biggest increase in teen suicide rates, followed by Arkansas and Virginia. At the other end of the scale were Montana, Alaska, and Connecticut. * means that there is a significant difference between the 2020 data and the previous five years.
In the study, published today in JAMA Pediatrics, scientists examined 85,000 registered suicides since 2015.
The data came from 14 states, which the scientists say represent the entire country nationally.
Each of the ten health districts of the United States Department of Health and Human Services had at least one state, and the states together made up about one-third of the population. The researchers said they would expect the same results even if they included 36 other states.
Why did teen suicide rates rise in the first year of the epidemic?
Data from 14 US states show an increase in suicide rates over the previous five-year average.
Although experts suggest that deaths may be behind this increase, the reason for this increase is unclear.
Dr. Maimuna Majumder, a computational epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, told DailyMail.com: “Dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy, but it is even harder for children who are coping with the death of a parent or a parent. Grandfather. †
He drew attention to figures showing that nearly a million Americans have died from the virus since the start of the pandemic.
In the analysis, the scientists compared the average suicides among teenagers between 2015 and 2019 with suicides in the first year of the pandemic.
Although there was an increase in 2020, this was generally not a significant difference, suggesting that the increase could be due to other factors.
But the rate of all suicides between the ages of 10 and 19 has increased significantly, suggesting that the pandemic is playing a role.
In total, it increased from 5.9 percent to 6.5 percent.
Nine of the 14 states included have seen teen suicides increase in 2020 over the past five years.
Indiana saw the strongest increase in teen suicides (+32%), along with Arkansas (25%) and Virginia (25%).
All six saw a significant increase in the suicide rate among youth. These were Indiana, Virginia, Georgia, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Vermont.
At the other end of the scale, Montana had the largest declines in teen suicides (25%), followed by Alaska (24%) and Connecticut (22%).
Only one state, Montana, achieved a significant result in 2020 over the previous five-year period.
Dr. Maimuna Majumder, a computational epidemiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital who participated in the study, told DailyMail.com that the increase could be due to one death.
“Nearly one million people have died from Covid in the United States, and estimates show that in the United States alone, more than 140,000 children lost at least one parent or grandparent to Covid between April 2020 and June 2021,” he said.
“Dealing with the death of a loved one is never easy, but it is even harder for children who may have to deal with the death of a parent or grandparent.
“The impact of such widespread loss of life on society and children is hard to overstate.”
Dr. Majumder and other researchers have called for more funding for children’s funeral services.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously found that suicide attempts among young adolescents increased by 50% in May 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. For boys, the rate was just under 4%.
They said this suggests that more young girls are in “terrible need” during the pandemic.
Experts warned early in the pandemic that quarantine and isolation rules will lead to an increase in suicides. But the evidence that this is the case is patchy, with some countries even reporting otherwise.
