American actress Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36, leaving her multi-million dollar estate to her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, legal experts have said.
The former child star, best known for her roles in television dramas and horror films, was unmarried at the time of her death. Her only child is currently being raised in Europe by her father, former Ukrainian heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, who holds sole custody of the girl.
Following her sudden passing, questions have arisen surrounding the distribution of her assets and future earnings. Legal specialists told People magazine that Kaya is expected to be the primary beneficiary of the actress's multi-million dollar fortune, though the child will not be able to manage the assets directly due to her age.
California probate jurisdiction and parental custody
It is not yet known whether Panettiere drafted a valid will or created a financial trust prior to her death. California attorneys Mark M. Stern, Jordan Matthews, and Jonathan Forster explained that the structure of her estate distribution will depend entirely on the presence of those legal documents.
If the actress died intestate without formal estate planning, her property will be distributed in accordance with California state law. Because Panettiere maintained legal residency in California, the state's probate court will oversee the proceedings and exercise control over the inheritance, despite her daughter living abroad in Europe.
Under California regulations, an inheritance belonging to a minor must be placed under special legal protection. If no private trust was created, the court will likely appoint a financial manager to administer the money on Kaya's behalf.
Stern identified Klitschko as the primary candidate for the role. The attorney noted that as Kaya's father and sole legal custodian, Klitschko is the natural choice to oversee her financial affairs. However, court appointment is not automatic. Panettiere's parents also hold the legal right to petition the court for control over their granddaughter's inheritance, although Matthews described such a challenge as unlikely.
Royalties, intellectual property, and court oversight
Under standard California legal procedures, Kaya would gain full control over her inheritance upon reaching 18 years of age. However, if Panettiere established a trust before her death, she could have designated an older age for the transfer of funds, such as 25 or 30.
The estate extends beyond standard bank accounts and real estate holdings to include ongoing intellectual property rights and earnings. Stern noted that potential assets include future residual payments and royalties from Panettiere's work in film and television.
Key sources of revenue include her roles in the sci-fi television series Heroes and the musical drama Nashville, as well as her appearances in the Scream horror movie franchise. The estate may also encompass earnings from books, licensing agreements, and commercial rights to Panettiere's name, image, and likeness.
Matthews added that the appointed manager will assume full responsibility for collecting future royalties and earnings owed to the estate. The manager will also be legally required to report regularly to the California court on how Kaya's funds are managed.
