Hair growth speed does not increase after haircuts

Cutting hair does not make it grow faster because growth occurs in scalp follicles, though regular trims help prevent split ends and maintain length.

Hair growth speed does not increase after haircuts

Getting frequent haircuts does not make hair grow faster, dispelling a long-held belief about hair care. Cutting the ends of hair has no impact on the biological speed of growth at the root.

According to fashion publication Grazia, hair growth occurs exclusively from hair follicles located inside the scalp. Because scissors only touch hair that has already grown out, trimming cannot alter the rate at which follicles produce new hair.

On average, human hair grows by approximately 1 to 1.5 cm per month. The exact growth rate varies from person to person based on genetics, age, hormonal balance, and general health.

Split ends and hair breakage

The widespread perception that hair grows faster following a haircut is caused by the removal of split and damaged ends. When ends become frayed and damaged, they snap off easily, causing hair to lose length as fast as it grows from the scalp.

Removing damaged ends prevents further snapping, allowing hair to retain its length. Trimming also gives hair a fuller, thicker, and more well-groomed appearance.

Recommended haircut frequency

The ideal schedule for a haircut depends on individual hair goals and current hair condition. Short hairstyles generally need a touch-up trim every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain their shape.

For those trying to grow their hair out longer, trimming split ends once every 3 to 4 months is sufficient to protect the hair shaft from breaking.

Factors influencing hair growth

Biological hair growth is far more influenced by diet and lifestyle than by scissors. Healthy hair development relies on balanced nutrition with sufficient protein, essential vitamins, and minerals, as well as adequate sleep, reduced stress levels, and proper scalp care.

Avoiding excessive heat styling, chemical dyeing, and harsh treatments is also crucial to prevent damage to the hair structure.

While regular trims do not speed up growth, they minimize breakage and preserve existing length. Separately, news agency UNIAN previously reported on a short haircut suited for women over 50 that provides a youthful appearance without requiring daily styling.
