France's Gravelines nuclear power plant urgently stopped three power units following a massive influx of jellyfish, Reuters reported, citing energy operator EDF. The facility is the largest nuclear power plant in France and one of the largest in the world.
Units three and four shut down automatically in line with operating procedures. Plant personnel then manually disconnected unit two and reduced the power output of unit one by 50 percent.
Only unit six continues to operate, while unit five is undergoing scheduled technical maintenance. EDF stated that the jellyfish situation has not affected the safety of equipment, personnel, or the environment.
Previous Jellyfish Incident
A similar incident occurred at the French station in August of last year. Jellyfish clogged the plant's cooling systems during that event, forcing a complete shutdown of the facility.
