Warner Bros. Television has begun production on the first authorized documentary about Gilmore Girls, which will premiere on the streaming platform HBO Max. The untitled project comes more than two decades after viewers first visited Stars Hollow.
Director Bonni Cohen is leading the film, which promises new light on the comedy drama that originally aired from 2000 to 2007. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband, executive producer Daniel Palladino, will narrate the documentary directly from their perspective.
Lead actress Lauren Graham is confirmed to participate, along with other key members of the original cast and technical crew. According to the official platform synopsis, the production explores the chemistry between the creators and the cast, showing how a show about a single mother and her daughter became an intergenerational phenomenon.
Unseen Archive Footage and Production Team
The documentary will feature previously unreleased archive material for fans. HBO Max confirmed the release will include unseen bloopers, behind the scenes footage, and looks at original shooting script pages.
This Machine Filmworks, a Sony Pictures Television company, is producing the documentary in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. RJ Cutler, Jane Cha Cutler, and the Palladinos serve as executive producers, while Bonni Cohen and Melissa Robledo handle production duties.
Previous Unofficial Project
The announcement follows reports in 2025 regarding an independent, unofficial feature film titled Searching for Stars Hollow. That project planned to feature interviews with series actors Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, and Chad Michael Murray.
