Formula One star George Russell has revealed he is engaged to his long-term girlfriend, Carmen Mundt, after proposing during a candlelit dinner on a sunny island getaway.
Russell, who races for Mercedes, shared photos of the proposal on social media, including one of Mundt showing off her engagement ring. The official Formula One account was among the first to congratulate the couple.
The pair have been together since 2020, and Russell said back in June that he was ready to propose. Mundt was born in Spain and moved to London at 18 to study business management and finance at the University of Westminster.
Russell on Mundt as his 'future'
Russell has previously credited Mundt with helping him stay grounded as an F1 driver, describing her as his "future." He told The Times: "Carmen brings me stability when it comes to racing and also a way to disconnect. Without doubt she's my future. So [I hope we'll be married] in due course. It won't be next week, but it won't be longer than five years. So somewhere in that timeframe."
In March, Russell said: "I have a really great group of people around me. Carmen is a huge part of that. She supports me in every way possible." He said that when he was in Melbourne preparing to race, she adjusted to the time zone, going to bed at six in the evening and waking at three in the morning. "Not only does she support me mentally, she's invested in what we're trying to achieve. And that helps a lot. I feel very fortunate," he said.
How the couple met
Russell and Mundt met by chance over a meal six years ago, when she did not know he was a Formula One driver. She had been set to meet a friend of his for a date in 2020. "My mate couldn't make it, so I thought I'll swing along to see how it goes," Russell told The Sun.
"She told me she's from the south of Spain and she wouldn't ever expect someone to know the small place she's from. I knew exactly where she was from, so it was quite coincidental," he said. Russell had spent significant time in Jerez, in southern Spain, during his karting days, which is where Mundt is from.
Mundt has since quit her high-flying financial job in London to live with Russell in Monaco, and now regularly supports him at races. When the couple marked five years together, she wrote on social media: "Five years with the most wonderful person I could ever ask for. Forever proud of who you are and what you do."
Russell currently sits third in the F1 drivers' standings, 59 points behind teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli and nine points behind seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari.
