Film critic and blogger Evgeny Bazhenov, also known as BadComedian, told National News Service that the record box-office success of Marvel superhero movie Spider-Man: New Day comes from hype, casting, and film quality.
Spider-Man: New Day earned $360 million in the United States during its opening weekend, marking the best start in North American box office history. Worldwide earnings exceeded $930 million, making it the second-highest global opening behind Avengers: Endgame, which made $1.22 billion. Bazhenov stated these records do not show a degradation in public taste.
Bazhenov said he would not call the new Spider-Man a great movie, describing it as specific mass cinema. However, he noted that the first film was wonderful and its sequels are quite good. He said the creators keep their finger on the pulse, use internet memes, and incorporate them into sequels to play directly with the audience.
Comparison to Terminator 2
Regarding comic book movies, Bazhenov stated that degradation describes what Marvel and the Marvel Universe reached as a whole. He said Avengers set an endpoint after which Marvel could produce nothing successful, leaving Spider-Man as the only franchise that saved the studio. Bazhenov called the film a successful reboot featuring great casting and a hero that hits the target audience.
Bazhenov compared the movie to Terminator 2, pointing to its target audience. He said many people grew up watching Spider-Man cartoons and films, making the franchise extremely popular in Russia as well. Bazhenov noted that although he never liked the character, he watched the animated series and recognizes the hero on posters.
He said people who watched Spider-Man in the 2000s now have their own families and children, and they are going to see the new film starring Tom Holland. Bazhenov described the main character as an ordinary kid facing the problems of kids his age while being a superhero, comparing this to Terminator 2 when viewers saw themselves in John Connor.
Tom Holland and Zendaya play the lead roles in the picture. Telegram channel Radiotochka NSN noted that the soundtrack features a song by singer Monetochka, who is recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation.
