Spider-Man: Brand New Day has set a new box office record in Spain, earning 3.2 million euros on its opening day and drawing more than 1.8 million viewers to Spanish cinemas, according to measurement firm Rentrak.
The film's success has repeated on a global scale. It took in 355 million dollars in its first weekend in the United States and Canada, plus 572 million dollars across 66 other countries, including 121 million dollars from the Chinese market.
In several territories, including Spain, the film moved its release forward to Wednesday, July 29, pushing its worldwide total to around 927 million dollars in just five days, according to figures published by Variety. That haul means the fourth installment of Tom Holland's Spider-Man has already overtaken the total box office of The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's film, which had been aiming to become the year's biggest earner after three weeks in theaters.
Beyond the numbers, the film has become a talking point for its introduction of characters like The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal.
