eShores Ranks 10 Best Vacation Spots Across the Balkans

British tour operator eShores has named the ten best holiday destinations across the Balkans to help travelers choose locations based on their personal holiday preferences.

While many tourists associate the Balkan region in Southeastern Europe primarily with inexpensive beach holidays along the coast, eShores noted that the area offers visitors a far wider variety of travel experiences.

Croatia features prominently in the selection with four separate destinations. The coastal city of Dubrovnik was chosen for its medieval walls, its UNESCO-listed Old Town, and its prominent filming locations used in the fantasy television series Game of Thrones.

The Dalmatian Islands off the Croatian coast were highlighted for island hopping trips, vineyards, and quiet bays. Further north along the Adriatic coast, the city of Split was recognized for its working Roman palace, seaside promenade, and urban beaches. Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia was selected for its wooden boardwalks that wind between cascading waterfalls.

Destinations in Slovenia, Montenegro, and Albania

In Slovenia, eShores selected Lake Bled and the surrounding Julian Alps, highlighting the destination's alpine lake, island church, and cliffside castle. In neighboring Montenegro, the Bay of Kotor was recommended for its calm coastal waters and surrounding mountain scenery.

Albania holds two spots on the list. The Albanian Riviera was picked for its beaches along the Ionian Sea, while the historic towns of Berat and Gjirokastër were highlighted for their traditional white Ottoman architecture and hilltop castles.

Locations in Bosnia and North Macedonia

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the southern city of Mostar was chosen for its iconic bridge, river divers, and views of turquoise waters. North Macedonia's entry features the historic town of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid, which offer ancient churches and lakeside swimming areas.

Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.Tourism previously published advice from travel experts on how tourists can decide between visiting Albania or Montenegro. The outlet also previously shared money-saving recommendations for travelers planning trips to Croatia.
