Director Jonathan Kasdan brought us back to the magical world of Willow with his recent Disney+ series. Warwick Davis returns as the title character and, 20 years after defeating the evil Queen Bavmorda, teams up with a new group of misfits to embark on a perilous rescue mission into the unknown.
It was important for Kasdan to recapture the spirit of the film in the series, and he also wanted the audience to feel the scale and scope of the character Willow Ufgood against this massive struggle, which is something we have had a lot in movies since the 80s.
In a recent interview with Collider, Kasdan explained:
And the other thing that is profound about that, at least for me, is Neverending Story it’s been huge for me during this time, and I match it Willow in many of these conversations because one of the things they both were Ron [Howard] and Wolfgang Peterson gave each of those films a sense of scale that was kind of terrifying when you were a kid.
And Warwick basically adds to that too, because he was this little person in this world of giant people. And I always thought that basically, I related to Willow as a kid. I referred to Atreyu as this guy who’s up against giant forces, and likewise, he was this skinny little kid against, really, in that movie, some kind of almost Lovecraftian cosmic forces, and the Nothing, and all of that stuff, and that had a huge impact, certainly, on what I was afraid of growing up and then how I thought about this show.
He really wanted to make something as scary and daunting as the first film, which ends up making the protagonist’s hope feel that much more inspiring and the prevailing that much more rewarding. I have not reached the Willow series yet, but it’s a plan to binge over the next couple of weeks with the fam. I’ve heard both great and not-so-great things about the series so far. You have looked? What do you think?
The sixth episode of Willow will be released on December 28, with the last two episodes airing on Disney+ on January 4 and 11.
