A month cut from holidays
In May 2026, the combination of the school calendar and holidays was particularly unfavorable for families. May 1 (Work Day), May 8 (Victory of 1945), Ascension (May 14) and Monday of Pentecost (May 25) all fall during the week. Consequence: almost no entire week of lessons and a succession of cuts that upset the usual points of reference for children, such as adults.
Because this is problematic for families
At first glance, these prolonged weekends would seem to be good news: more time with the family, the possible holiday and a less intense pace. But reality is much more faded. For parents, these isolated days are difficult to manage. Finding a punctual guard for a single public holiday is often more complicated than for the real identified holidays. Recreational centers are not always open and the nanny cannot necessarily provide a divided service.
Families without relay, in particular single parents, are faced with an almost impossible equation: it continues to work while children remain at home. As for the parents who set off on leave to cover these bridges, they see their reserve of free days exhausting themselves quickly, sometimes at the expense of summer or other more important periods.
School weeks without continuity
On the side of the children, these incessant cuts are not ideal. The chain two or three days of weeks weaken the school rate. Teachers must constantly reorganize their program, which makes educational progression more difficult. Students risk losing concentration and have difficulty maintaining a common thread in their learning. For many parents, May 2026 might seem a “punctured” month, with a more complicated recovery than expected.
School areas not together affected
Not all families will be hosted in the same brand. The areas A (Lyon, Bordeaux, Digione, etc.) EB (Lille, Marseille, Rennes, etc.) are particularly affected, with weeks of class sometimes reduced to just two days. Area C (Paris, Toulouse, Montpellier) is a little less worried, but still undergoes the effects of a fragmented calendar.
Between constraints and opportunities
Some parents put things in perspective and see in these cuts the opportunity to blow, enjoy prolonged weekend or organize small out of season holidays. But for the vast majority, the month of May 2026 promises to be above all as a permanent logistics challenge, where every week he will ask to reinvent the family organization.
