James Cameron believes the technology could be weaponized to make the events of TERMINATOR happen in real life

The 1984 movie The Terminator was a futuristic sci-fi about the uprising of Artificial Intelligence and their quest to extinguish the human race. History was ahead of its time in thinking about these concepts, but after nearly forty years of technological advancement, it looks like it might be closer to reality. At least, that’s what the film’s director believes.

Director James Cameron is on a press tour promoting his latest blockbuster film, Avatar: The Way of Waterand while you’re sitting with the Without intelligence podcast hosted by Sean Hayes, Will Arnett and Jason Bateman, he was asked if he was afraid of a dark future machine uprising similar to The Terminator. He explained:

“Well, I’m not ‘scared’ but I’m certainly quite concerned about the potential misuse of AI. I think AI can be great, but it could also literally be the end of the world. Talk to all the AI scientists – and I know a lot of them – and whenever I raise my hand at their seminars or something, they start laughing. ‘Oh, that’s the Skynet Guy, sure, we really want to hear from you.’ The point is, no technology has ever been used as a weapon. And do we really want to fight against something smarter than us that isn’t us in our world? I don’t think so.”

He went on to say that it’s possible that machines have already taken over:

“Look, an AI could have taken over the world and is already manipulating it, and we just don’t know because it would have control over all the media and everything. And what better explanation for how absurd everything is right now Because nothing makes any sense to me, I don’t know about you.”

Well, they’ve been very strange years. I don’t know all of this though, and maybe it’s better that I don’t know. I’m happy enough, so if the AI is checking me out, they’re doing a great job.
