It’s one of the hottest debates in the film community since the release of ‘Titanic’ in 1997: Did Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jack really have to die? Couldn’t you enter the board with Rose (Kate Winslet) to be rescued together? James Cameron is pretty sick of defending his demise, but now he’s turned to the experts to see if they’ll leave him alone once and for all.

The director, who is promoting ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, explained to the Toronto Sun that he had carried out a study to verify that Jack’s destiny was to die in the Atlantic: “We did a scientific study to put an end to this whole thing and drive a stake through his heart once and for all.”.
This was the study in question, which we can also see in a February special on National Geographic: “We did a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the table from the film and will be doing a small special that will be released in February. We took two specialists with the same masses as Kate and Leo, put sensors around and in them, and plunged them into ice-cold water for testing to see if they could survive using a variety of methods. The answer was that there was no way either of them could survive. only one could survive”.
“Love is measured by sacrifice”
And although science itself seems to be on his side, the director points out that there is a narrative sense behind the death of the protagonist of ‘Titanic’ and he does not regret the decision: “No. I needed to die. It’s like Romeo and Juliet. It is a film about love, sacrifice and mortality. love is measured by sacrifice”. He hopes the report will settle the matter once and for all: “Maybe, maybe after 25 years I won’t have to deal with all this anymore”. We highly doubt it, James.
The debut of this special will coincide with the re-release of ‘Titanic’ in theaters next Valentine’s Day with a remastered version with the latest 3D and HFR technology (high range of frames per second) that we can already appreciate in “Avatar: The Sense of Water”.
