December 6 began the end of ‘Dark Matter’ on HBO Max. After two seasons playing with the line between good and evil, Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter have joined the final battle for the worlds as narrated in the book’ The Lacquered Spyglass”. This third and final book by Philip Pullman is his most ambitious yet, and there was even the option of adapting it into multiple seasons or a longer one. In the end, producers Jane Tranter and Dan McCulloch decided to pack all the twists and emotions that the trilogy finale promises into eight chapters. With them and with the actors James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson we talked about the intense journey up to here and their possible future fantasy projectsboth inside and outside this fantasy world.

Though they both play Lyra Belacqua’s (Dafne Keen) parents, in a few episodes we’ve seen them act like one, having abandoned, betrayed, and even kidnapped her. Anyway, The imaginary father of this young Spanish actress doesn’t believe her character was ever bad. I’ve never interpreted it that way.. But he is a very stubborn person in achieving his goal.” His co-star and father, Ruth Wilson, compares these parents to her view of Christianity, in the sense that “the ideal is greatbut the method you use to implement it or the harm you do to people is horrendous”. Of course, this time he already warns that it will be different, really. “Her intentions are good this season, which is less fun to play. I was sorry she wasn’t more evil”.

Both actors demonstrate in just 5 minutes how they have internalized the background of their characters and, therefore, the whole message of the series on “dust and original sin”. This was quite a challenge considering how acclaimed and complex this literary saga started in 1995 and the failure of its previous more superficial adaptation, “The Golden Compass”. Anyway, McAvoy assures that there was no pressure: “I’ve never heard it like this. The only reason it could be is because the material is so expensive”. It is true that both he and his partner already knew what it was like to star in a big franchise with many messages and even more followers, such as Charles Xavier from ‘X-Men: First Class’ and as Alison Bailey in ‘The Affair’, respectively . Like this, I would not hesitate to repeat this first, whether with Marvel, HBO or anyone who offers quality: “Of course I would do another big fantasy project with a long shot if it’s as good as this”.

Will there be other stories in this world?

If they both want to repeat themselves in the world of “The Dark Materials,” it looks like their executive producers will be able to offer them quite a few opportunities. In this arduous task of summarizing such a complex book, Jane Tranter recognizes him “There were things that we couldn’t go into detail if we had more episodes. For example, following Mary Malone more closely on her journey across the worlds, telling the story of the witches in more detail…” Although he has already warned that this is the end of the trilogy, he made his concrete points and intentions clear and the showrunner’s to continue exploring the world Pullman created. “It’s no secret that Jack Thorne wants to adapt ‘Once Upon a Time in the North,’ the origin story of Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison. And I also don’t hide that I would like to adapt the Dust trilogy, but Philip is still writing it, so we’ll have to wait”. For now, the story of the dust and its meaning to humanity is explored in a two-parter every Tuesday on HBO Max through December 27.
