‘Wonder Woman 3’ Canceled Due To Creative Differences With Its Director, Patty Jenkins

‘Wonder Woman 3’ Canceled Due To Creative Differences With Its Director, Patty Jenkins

‘Wonder Woman 1984’ was released in December 2020 and was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic, simultaneously releasing in theaters and on HBO Max in an experiment that did not give the best results to Warner and which, after a year, fell behind to return to the theatrical releases. Even so, the studio was quick to re-announce a third installment of DC’s Wonder Woman with Patty Jenkins to direct and Gal Gadot to star. But those plans went to waste with the surprising decision to cancel the project.

The Hollywood Reporter dropped the bombshell Dec. 7 in a report on the restructuring DC Studios is going through under the new direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who are crafting a long-term plan for the DC Universe, in which the clear intention is to leave the previous regime behind. Gunn has already talked about it and, although he assures that part of the information revealed by THR is not true, the cancellation of ‘Wonder Woman 3’ would be a reality.

‘Wonder Woman 3’ Canceled Due To Creative Differences With Its Director, Patty Jenkins

This would be indicated by new details that emerged from the report, which points to the relationship between Warner Bros. and Jenkins as the main reason their film ended up being scrapped. According to Deadline, the decision to cancel ‘Wonder Woman 3’ would have come directly from Warner, and not from Gunn and Safran (or at least not only from them).

Several sources reveal that Jenkins delivered the first script for the sequel last week and Warner executives didn’t like it at all, as it reproduced character and narrative issues reminiscent of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, a film whose outcome was not a happy one. The studio then gave him the opportunity to rewrite it using his own notes, but Jenkins declined and left the project.. Creative tension between the two parties led to the film’s cancellation, and Jenkins is said to be very angry at the company, which she wants nothing to do with. However, there is a desire to keep Wonder Woman in the DC Universe, as she is her most iconic superhero; It’s just that right now it’s unknown what direction Gunn and Safran intend to take with her.

Gal Gadot’s premonition?

On Dec. 6, a day before the report uncovering the shocking changes in DC, Gal Gadot posted a tweet, a little out of nowhere, the one I’ve seen now, makes us think.

In it, the Israeli actress said the following: “A few years ago, it was announced that I would be playing Wonder Woman. I was so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible and iconic character, and most of all, I’m thankful for you. The fans.”. His words sound like a goodbye, but the tweet ends with a message of hope: “I can’t wait to share his next chapter with you”. It is not known if Gadot was aware of what was happening between Warner and Jenkins or if, on the contrary, the publication was just a reaction to that..

All of which leaves Gadot’s future in the DC universe up in the air, in the same way that Henry Cavill’s Superman is doubtful if he fits in with the plans of the studio’s new directive. Rumors point to upcoming cameos from both actors in future projects, but following the new changes it’s not out of the question that they’ll be scrapped. We may find out more next week when Gunn and Safran present their plan for the DC Universe to Warner..
