Hayley Atwell has had an interesting path in the MCU like Peggy Carter. Last we saw of her, she was inside Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness where she was brutally killed while fighting the Scarlet Witch. This was an alternate universe version of the character, where she is Captain Carter and a member of the Illuminati. So while this version of the character is dead, there are plenty of other versions that are still around in the MCU multiverse.
When you talk to Digital Spy about what happened in Multiverse of madnessAtwell explained, “It definitely wasn’t, you know, the trajectory that I see for Peggy. I definitely wish she had more to do.”
As for Peggy’s return, Atwell understands it’s out of his control, saying, “It depends on what Marvel and the audience want,” he continued.
“I’m a keeper of her. Compared to the rest of my career and everything I’ve done or my stage work and doing Mission: Impossible now and all the diversity of roles I’ve played, and the diversity that I get to explore, and being able to play more complex roles and villains and many different things – she’s not mine anymore. She lives in the world of people who have taken her to their hearts. And it’s beautiful. But it’s kind of like: yeah, you can’t control the impact that a particular role has on the rest of the world”.
I’m a fan of Atwell’s Peggy Carter character and would love to see her return in the future. It would be nice to see it in action again. We know that we will see her return as Captain Carter in the upcoming second season of What happens if…? animated series. But hopefully it will come back in live-action form.
