Paz Padilla (‘A todo tren 2’): “Santiago Segura intended to make a film made by women”

Going at the rate of one film a year isn’t easy, and extending it to two already suggests a level of organization and success within the reach of very few. But it is not a challenge that Santiago Segura will resist, who, after retaining the crown of highest-grossing Spanish director with ‘Padre no hay más que uno 3’, returns to theaters December 2 with ‘Full train 2: Yes, it happened to them again’. However, she had the help of Inés de León, who took up her baton in directing and facilitated him in the making of these two productions in 2022, as she underlined in her interview with eCartelera.

“It was difficult, but he took the lead thanks to Inés’ help”began by explaining Santiago Segura. “It’s the first script in my life that I’ve written and I haven’t directed, so I was looking for someone I could trust. I’ve been a huge fan of her for more than 10 years when she did the web series ‘The Tenants and I loved it. I loved it. It sounded like a lot of fun, and it got worse with each chapter, so I decided to look up the name to write it down, because you never know. I saw that she had directed it and I had written it, so what for her was admiration of her became devotion. And I wrote it and that’s how we met”.

Also, they also have family movies like ‘Fast Train 2’ the added challenge of shooting with the kids, which requires greater care in shooting days and in terms of school permits. However, Segura says that previous experience in the previous films helped them adapt very well to the mechanics and acquire an agile pace while being extremely careful with the needs of the little ones.

Still from the filming of 'A todo tren 2'

“That’s the beauty We already have the mechanics, we know the tutors, the permits to request,… Children must also present a certificate to school proving that they are well, that they have good academic performance, because otherwise they will not miss any lessons. This was shot in the summer, so they didn’t have to miss class. It’s all measured”explained the director. “For example, I am very careful with my daughter, because Sirena has already been asked for a series and two feature films. But I told them no, only with her father. And with Inés. So see if I have trusted Inés that she I also left my daughter.

For her part, Inés de León says the project gave her “horrible vertigo” when Santiago Segura offered it to her, because directing a continuation of what was the highest-grossing Spanish film of 2021 presented her with the challenge to equal the achievements of the director of Torrente, of which very few can boast. However, He claims to have taken into account everything Segura did in the first ‘A todo tren’ to get, at least, like it as much as that. “When you do a second part you have to go the way of the first because otherwise you will disappoint the audience”explained the director on how she approached this sequel “I’m satisfied that it likes it like the first one, because people like it a lot”.

The “Peaces” come to give a lot of war

But the real protagonists of the show are neither Santiago Segura, who this time his appearance on the screen is limited to a couple of scenes, nor Inés de León, who has also thrown herself into the role of a character in the film. The show is taken over by Paz Vega and Paz Padilla, who They went from a small cameo in the previous installment to being the main protagonists. In their conversation with eCartelera, both analyzed their work on the film, the success of these family comedies or the differences between working with Segura and working with a director like Inés de León.

“I think Santiago Segura had the intention of making a film made by women”points out Paz Padilla on the increased focus on female talent in the sequel. “Indeed, there is Marta González de Vega as screenwriter, us as the protagonist and Inés as director. A film by women for women”. However, Paz Vega qualified her words by also praising the entire male cast, including faces like Carlos Iglesias or Florentino Fernández, and stressing that the fun is global in nature.

‘Full Train 2:’ is available in theaters from December 2nd.
