The manga “Saint Seiya”, known in Spain as “Los Caballeros del Zodiaco”, has had several audiovisual adaptations since its creation in 1985. It has gone from cartoons to animated series and movies to video games and more, but, until until now, he had never entered the world of live action. After a small preview a couple of days ago, we can now enjoy the official trailer of the first live-action adaptation of “Knights of the Zodiac”, whose premiere is scheduled for 2023.
The film revolves around Seiya, an orphan who discovers that he has a very powerful mystical energy inside. He is played by Mackenyu (“Kenshin, the Samurai Warrior: The End”), son of martial arts film legend Sonny Chiba. Sean Bean (‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Game of Thrones’) gives life to Alman Kiddo, Seiya’s mentor and who recruits him for the Knights of the Zodiac. In addition to these two actors, the main cast is completed by Madison Iseman (‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’, ‘Annabelle Comes Home’), who will play Sienna, a girl who can’t control her powers, and by Famke Janssen (‘X-Men’), Nick Stahl (‘Sleepwalker’), Diego Tinoco (‘On My Block’) and Mark Dacascos (‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’), whose roles are still unknown.
At the controls of the project there are Tomasz Baginski, executive producer of “The Witcher”, as director and Josh Campbell (“10 Cloverfield Street”) and Matt Stuecken (“10 Cloverfield Street”) as writers. Andy Cheng reprises the role he played in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” as the action coordinator in this project. An origin story that could enjoy a long future if successful, the film is a co-production of Japanese studio Toei Animation and Sony Pictures through Stage 6 Films.
Better late than never
In 2017, Japanese media reported that a live-action ‘Knights of the Zodiac’ movie was in development, but for four years, the creative process was not on track, constantly delaying, with little information about it and with much uncertainty about the final destination of the project. In September 2021, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that production on the film was finally beginning. ‘Knights of the Zodiac’ will hit theaters in 2023, six years after the first reports of the project’s existence.
