Universal Pictures recently released a second trailer for ‘Super Mario Bros.: The Movie’, the animated film about Nintendo’s plumber created by Illumination Entertainment. As already happened with the first preview, the voice of Chris Pratt in the role of the mustachioed protagonist has once again aroused debate. He’s joined by Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, two of the characters who were first seen in this second trailer. Meanwhile, in Spain we hold our breath as we wait for the film’s official voice cast to be announced.
The Spanish dubbing that we hear in this second preview hides a very fresh curiosity. Translator Javier Pérez Alarcón recently pointed out on Twitter the coincidence that the voice actors who voice Mario and Luigi, brothers in video games, are also brothers in life. They are Guillermo Romero and Rafa Romero, and it was a matter of fate. Guillermo is Chris Pratt’s usual voice actor (we heard him in the MCU, in ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ and ‘The Final List’, for example). Rafa, for his part, is the usual Spanish voice of Charlie Day, chosen as Luigi for the English dub. Pérez Alarcón points out another detail: Rafa Romero has already voiced Mario’s brother in the 1993 live action film, in which John Leguizamo played Luigi.
The coincidences of life: Guillermo Romero (regular voice of Chris Pratt) voices Mario. Rafa Romero (fixed voice of Charlie Day and who had already voiced Luigi in the 90’s film) doubles Luigi. The two are brothers and voice the Mario brothers :_____) https://t.co/8gT1WKxwnv

Waiting for the final cast
Keep in mind that the rumors in the trailers don’t have to end up being the chosen rumors for the final version of the film that hits theaters (just remember the one that was involved when Disney released the Anabel Alonso-less ‘Finding Dory’ trailers , for instance). However, just look at the answers to trailer tweets on the Universal account to see what a very first campaign is being formed to demand that they keep a cast of professional voice actors and not famous actors or characters to give voice to such iconic characters.

To date, the trailers round out the lead voice cast with Laura Pastor (regular voice of Emma Watson in Spain) as Princess Peach, Nano Castro as Bowser and David Robles as Toad.

“Super Mario Bros. The Movie” will be released in Spanish theaters on March 31, 2023. It was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. On these lines you can see another advance released in the Netherlands in which we see Mario discovering the pipes of the Mushroom Kingdom and the Toads collecting their salary with the coins that come out of the brick blocks.
