Thanksgiving Fattens Broadway Box Office as Holiday Week Ticket Prices Soar;  Festival presents “Funny Girl”, “Lion King”, “Six”.

Even with one less show on Broadway and total admissions for the 33 productions down slightly from the previous week, Broadway box office for Thanksgiving week rose 22% to a whopping $37,475,773 due to higher holiday ticket prices -Dollar.

Not coincidentally, the average ticket price was up 22% from the week before, at $144.53 (compared to $118.45 the week before Thanksgiving).

Broadway attendance typically doesn’t spike during the Thanksgiving holiday — which comes later in Christmas and New Year’s — and 2022 was no different. Attendance at the 33 shows was flat from the previous week, with the increase in revenue mainly due to higher ticket prices.

A few random examples: The average ticket price for & Julia in the week ending November 20 it was $112, up from last week’s $141; A strange loop$91 to $102; Funny girl$174 to $209; Hamilton$192 to $251; hmm, $155 to $176; and the music man$231 to $261.

Not to be outdone, Broadway’s comeback kid The skim of the opera went from an average ticket price of $137 to $172 and was one of only two productions – MJ was the other – standing room only. ghostwhich announced today that it would stay at the Majestic Theater for two more months and close in April instead of February, grossed $2,241,317 over the holiday week, up 26% from the week before.

the other sale, MJtook in a whopping $1,958,177, breaking its own house record of 8 shows per week.

It’s Too Early to Determine the Promotional Impact of Attending the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – Lea Michele Co-Opened the Event Funny girls “Don’t rain on my parade” and A nice sound, some like it when it’s warm and The lion king was also presented. Both Funny girl and The lion king had a noticeable increase in box office numbers, but like others on the list, this is likely due to higher ticket prices. Just like that, sixwhich performed at the CBS Thanksgiving Parade, grossed $1,347,558, nearly matching its best week to date of $1,357,276 in April.

Two shows officially opened during Thanksgiving week, one of which was fitting A Christmas song with Jefferson Mays in an acclaimed performance. Carol grossed $370,150, a jump of $151,206 from the previous week, and occupied 62% of the seats at Dutchman with an average ticket price of $63.

The other opener was KPOP, $224,389 ($97,127 up from last week) and 82% capacity at Circle in the Square. The average ticket costs a modest $50.

In the season to date, Broadway has grossed $770,487,751 with a total attendance of 6,068,954 at an approximately 87% seat load rate.

The 33 productions reported on Broadway last week were & Juliet, 1776, A Christmas Carol, Ain’t No Mo’, Aladdin, Almost Famous, A Beautiful Noise, Beetlejuice, The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Death of a Salesman, Funny Girl, Hadestown, Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Into the Woods, Kimberly Akimbo, KPOP, Leopoldstadt, The Lion King, Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man & the Pool, The Music Man, MJ, Moulin Rouge!, Ohio State Murders, The Phantom of the Opera, The Piano Lesson, Six, A Strange Loop, Party Like It Hot, Take Me Out, Topdog/Underdog and Weak.
