‘Strange world’ gets number 1 in the Spanish box office, but is one of the weakest of the year

The more than twenty previews that arrived in Spanish cinemas last Friday achieved one of the worst collections of the year. According to Comscore data, the box office remained very low 2.78 million euros and 418,761 spectators from Friday to Sunday. This drop of more than 120 thousand euros could be due to several factors. To begin with, Sunday was the appointment with the World Cup in Qatar, the Spanish national team faced Germany, and it’s difficult to counter-program something like this. Except when the viewer is overwhelmed by so many novelties together, without any of them really being able to shine. Sure, there is some movement at the top of the chart.

‘Strange world’ gets number 1 in the Spanish box office, but is one of the weakest of the year

Starting with number one, welcoming the “weird world” of Disney. The animated film opened in 614 theaters and managed to top the charts with a rather decent €640,000, which shows how weak the weekend was. Its average per cinema was 1,763 euros. In terms of animation this year, ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’, ‘DC League of Super Pets’, ‘Lightyear’, ‘The Bad Guys’, ‘Tadeo Jones 3: The Emerald Table’ and ‘Minions: The origin of Gru’, so it wasn’t really a triumph for the House of Mouse. Her hope is that families will take advantage of the upcoming holidays and weekends to bring the kids and scratch some more Christmas with the holidays, even if they’ll struggle with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” that monopolizes the rooms from December 21.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” loses one place, and adds 528,720 euros to a total close to 6 million euros. It’s a sharp drop, 60% compared to the previous weekend, and the average per screen is just €691. ‘Black Adam’ still brings him an 800 thousand euro advantage. And it is still a long way from the 7.8 million euros that the first ‘Black Panther’ made in 2018.

‘As bestas’ loses 43% of the box office in its third week, but only drops one position in the standings. It has reached a box office of 269,441 euros, and its cumulative is already 1.64 million euros, exceeding 250,000 admissions. For his part, “The fourth passenger” has a similar decline (44%), but already exceeds 3.5 million euros after its fifth week. This weekend it achieved a box office of 236,600 euros.

In fifth position we find the second most viewed premiere of the weekend: ‘Historias para no cuentar’. Cesc Gay’s film with a cast full of well-known faces from our cinema has to settle for 222,834 euros and an average of 944 euros per theater, the second best of the week after ‘Strange World’.

The third best premiere of the week is for ‘The King Woman’. Viola Davis’ film grossed €169,000. ‘Hasta los huesos: Bones and All’ debuted in ninth position with 84,204 euros. The two have cinema averages below €500 despite a fairly large line-up from Sony and Warner respectively. ‘Close’ by Lukas Dhont is the only other premiere that sneaks into the top 20, in 15th place in particular with 31,530 euros. The rest of the novelties earned less than 17,000 euros over the whole weekend. Since Netflix doesn’t release box office data, we can’t know how it fared for “Punch in the Back: The Mystery of the Glass Onion” or Guillermo del Toro’s “Pinocchio”.

The Menu… of previews of the week

Don’t let the beat stop. More news arrives this Friday to start tackling the Constitution Bridge and, incidentally, the Christmas season. Universal premieres the wildly festive ‘Silent Night’ starring David Harbour. Warner and Santiago Segura launch ‘A todo tren 2’. Disney brings “The menu”, which has good references to the United States. Sony and Jaume Balagueró transform Ester Expósito into a scream queen in “Venus”. And these are just some of the first riders of the week, who at least won’t have to face another appointment for the Reds in Qatar.
