Black Panther: Wakanda Forever became a worldwide hit and moviegoers discovered Letitia Wright’s Shuri as the new Black Panther.
The sequel writers share what other characters they came up with to take on the superhero role after Chadwick Boseman’s death.
“We tossed around ideas and tried to extrapolate where the story was going and what was the most impactful choice — what’s the best journey?” Writer Joe Robert Cole told Rolling Stone. “And where do you go after the movie in terms of these characters? M’Baku was definitely someone who got kicked around a bit.
Cole explained that since the character is becoming the new Black Panther in the Marvel Comics, it’s easier to go with Shuri.
“Shuri is Black Panther and there’s a natural organic nature, I think that’s the best way to put it, she’s going to be Panther. But you kick the hoop on all kinds of ideas. And you just want to make the best decision and do what’s best for the story,” Cole added.
The reporter suggested Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o, would have made a great sequel and Cole said: “It’s been thrown around!” Her name has definitely been kicked around.
While most of the script had to be changed after Boseman’s death, one aspect of the story remained the same, revealing that T’Challa had a child.
“Having a child has always been in the DNA of what we wanted to do,” Cole said. “After his death, we just didn’t know how best to include him. So there were several iterations of his son in our new story. And finally we got to the reveal at the end.”
