AMC Networks, Free League Publishing and Genuine Entertainment have teamed up to bring us a new official tabletop RPG for The walking dead Universe. The game will debut on Kickstarter in spring 2023, which will give you the opportunity to gain early access to the core rulebook, a starter set and other premium accessories and limited-run exclusives before its retail release in the fall 2023. Not sure why they need to run all of that via Kickstarter rather than just having a special pre-order period that might deliver those same goodies. Regardless, the game appears to be a lot of fun for fans of the series and survival games. As Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimpleputs it:
The Walking Dead has always been about characters – and audiences, by extension – facing impossible life and death choices… encountering familiar and brand new faces and places, and, within our apocalypse, making the most great: who will you be? We’ve seen many stories in the Walking Dead universe, now it’s time to see yours.
The game will put a new spin on Year Zero’s engine and allow players to not only hone their physical skills, but also fully explore what makes them tick. The game is more about the human choices you make in the face of the apocalypse and how you decide to survive rather than killing walkers, although I’m sure there are plenty if you will. You can choose to spend a lot of time fortifying your strongholds and figuring out the ins and outs of survival, or you can put it on the back burner and focus on the human drama. The goal is to make every game session feel like an episode of The Walking Dead.
If you are not convinced, you can check out the Liveplay limited series that will be released. The show proper will feature original events culled from the series’ writers’ room while following new characters who intersect with core story elements and cross paths with a familiar face or two.
