Fandom, a leading entertainment portal with more than 350 million unique users per month, has released its fourth annual web traffic analysis study, consisting of wikis and articles, and a survey of 5,000 users from the US and UK United . In this analysis they drew some interesting conclusions about the current state of pop culture. For example, they do a comparison between the habits of Marvel and DC fans.

A third of Marvel fans are tired of so many series and movies, according to a study

The study finds it 36% of Marvel fans feel “fatigue” due to the volume of films and series released by the House of Ideas. However, Fandom also points out that 81% of Marvel fans would watch any content from the franchise, regardless of the character or characters involved. 57% of DC fans are more selective and follow specific characters, and unlike Marvel fans, only 20% are jaded by the number of series and movies.

The MCU has become a nonstop content factory since they started releasing series on Disney+ connected to the movies, and therefore mandatory if you want to follow the development of the overall story. DC has opted in recent years for a more open perspective, with more or less connected films, added to completely independent projects such as ‘Joker’ or ‘The Batman’. Matt Reeves’ film, by the way, has amassed the most visits in the fandom of superheroic releases this year..

The four types of fans

Fandom divides its users into four categories. Defenders are avid fans who consider their favorite movies and series part of their identity. Among the titles most followed by them we find Marvel, DC, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Stranger Things’ or ‘Rick and Morty’. Intentionalists are not that hardcore, but they watch the series and movies without distractions and follow them learning everything about them. They are fans of “Breaking Bad”, “The Handmaid’s Tale”, “Dragon Ball Z” or “Only murders in the building”. They are the most common group among its users. Culturalists see headlines being talked about for fear of not joining the conversation. They see “Ted Lasso”, “The Sopranos” or “It’s Always Philadelphian”. Lastly, flirters don’t rush to see anything on their first day, they see certain things because they’ve heard about them but they don’t pay 100% attention or make them part of their identity. Come “The Office”, “SpongeBob” or “Friends”. As for those fan groups, Marvel would bring together more defenders and intentionalists, while DC would have more culturalists and flirters.
