The 18-24 demographic has been a cornerstone of the domestic box office as it recovers from the pandemic, and Gen Z audiences plan to go this holiday season, according to a recent Fandango poll of 1,000 participants.
96% of respondents said going to the cinema was their favorite way to spend time away from home, while 94% said they were satisfied with their cinema visits in the past year. Nearly half of Gen Z adults surveyed enjoyed at least four or more movies on the big screen this year, with 78% saying they are seeing more movies in theaters than before the pandemic, indicating increased customer satisfaction.
Other important conclusions from Fandango’s study are:
- 94% of Gen Z adults say that going to the movies is one of their top 3 leisure activities, ahead of visiting friends/family and outdoor activities, only surpassed by TV streaming and social media screen time.
- 94% base their movie decisions on an interesting trailer.
- 91% are more likely to go to the cinema to see a film that wants to be seen on a big screen with big sound and a receptive audience.
- 90% appreciate the convenience of online seat reservations.
- 87% say there is no way to replicate the movie experience at home.
- More than two-thirds look forward to seeing more films in premium large formats such as IMAX and Dolby Cinema as well as in 3D this season.
The study also found that Gen Z adult moviegoers are also more likely to go to the movies with a group of friends or family than they were before the pandemic. More than half (55%) said they went to the cinema with three or more people in 2022, compared to just 48% in 2019. They also go more often in the evenings than in previous years, with 70% now going between entering at 17:00 and 22:00 compared to just 57% in 2019.
Additionally, 55% of Gen Z moviegoers buy their tickets online, compared to 43% of general moviegoers. A majority of this Gen Z gauged their seats on their phones.
The top five films for wide distribution and demographic plans to see before the end of the year come from 20th Century Studios avatar: The path of the water (December 16), Disney Animations strange world (Nov. 23), Paramounts Babylon (December 23), Universal/Blumhouses violent night (December 2) and Dreamworks Animations Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (December 21).
“Our research shows that Gen Z adult moviegoers plan to see multiple movies in theaters this holiday season, motivated by new releases begging to be seen on the big screen,” said Fandango VP of Domestic Ticketing, Melissa Heller. “With the holiday season starting early, Gen Z fans contributed to one of our best opening weekend pre-sales this year Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
