Rian Johnson calls KNIVES OUT 3 “The coolest creative challenge” of his career

Director Rian Johnson made a splash with his funny and successful 2019 murder mystery, Knives out, and Netflix promptly signed him to make a couple sequels to the movie about the streamer. We are about to see the second film in the series, Glass onion: a knife-edged mysteryand Johnson is already working on the third film, which is proving to be a challenge.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Johnson talked about the third film, which is already in development:

“For a while I thought maybe I should have done something else first. But God’s honest truth is I had so much fun making this, and the creative challenge of figuring out a third film that’s completely different from both this which gives the first: Right now, this is the most interesting creative challenge for me. So I might just dive in and see what comes out of it.”

Daniel Craigwho plays Detective Benoit Blanc in the films, said: “It could be [the next thing I do]. I do not know. It depends on how fast [Johnson] is.” And, if Johnson has his way, the Knives Out series may not stop at three films. He said of himself and Craig, the only recurring cast member:

“As long as the two of us are still having fun, and as long as we can keep having these really new experiences every time, and find new ways to challenge each other… The moment we feel like we’re repeating ourselves, or just turning a crank on a car, we’ll stop. Because for me, the whole conception of this whole series is the same as Agatha Christie did with her books: we’re doing something new and surprising every time.”

It must be really hard to think of new murder mysteries that are just as gripping and character-driven as the first one. I’m a fan of what I’ve seen so far and I’m excited to see the second film, the third and everything that comes after!

Glass onion: a knife-edged mystery opens in select theaters on November 23 for a week, then streams on Netflix starting December 23.
