Super Mario Bros. It’s a classic game and it really put Nintendo and the NES on the map in the 1980s. The game was launched for Famicom in Japan in 1985, and apparently I have been playing hard mode to no avail.
I was surfing the internet the other day and a video from @retrogamingonline on TikTok (via Lifehacker) blew me away. Up until this video, my understanding was that if you got a “Game Over” then you had to get started Super Mario Bros. over from the world 1-1.
Apparently, this was a dirty, dirty lie! The video shows that after a “Game Over” hold A when you press Start and it will launch you at the beginning of the world you arrived in. For example, if you die in World 5-3, you will only return to World 5-1. HOW THIS WAS NOT WIDELY KNOWN?
Of course, you have to take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt, so I tried it myself. I don’t have my NES handy at the moment, but I have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription (thanks, Nintendo) and this has Super Mario Bros. available on it. I started it, quickly got to World 4-2 and tried the trick. IT REALLY WORKED! Consider my mind absolutely flabbergasted. You knew this way Super Mario Bros. not that hard?
