Strange Al Yankovic has been a staple in the music industry since the 1980s and has a huge fan base around the world, so a movie about the star is bound to do well, but Yankovic is the film’s director, Eric Appel, took a risk with this story. The “biopic” is more of an embellished realistic story, which imagines a wilder Yankovic with a rock star’s checkered past, instead of the mild true story of a family man everyone loves, which would be true, but less exciting.

Another bet was the casting of Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in the role of Yankovic. Some fans were confused by the choice, but it turned out to be the right one. In a recent interview with Uproxx, Al Yankovic explained that he and director Eric Appel both believed that, despite his lack of similarity, Radcliffe was perfect for the role.

“Eric Appel and I made a list of about half a dozen people that we thought, oh, these people would probably be good at the role. And we both kept gravitating around Daniel’s name. We just thought he would. We knew he was great at comedies, and he was also good at dramas. And we need both of them for this movie, because obviously it’s a comedy, but we need it to sound like it’s an extremely serious Oscar-worthy Hollywood. biopic. And we knew Daniel would really focus on that tone and really get what we were looking for. “

In an interview with / Film, Appel talked about Radcliffe’s performance, saying:

“As good as his performance was, it left me speechless. I was hoping it would be great. And I was confident it would be great. But until you see him standing up, my God. I remember sitting behind a chair. monitor and there is this shot, and Dan has tears in his eyes in this scene, and Al and I are turning to each other and we’re like, ‘What do we do … I mean, not “I don’t know . We didn’t expect it. ‘”
