Last week it was announced that Disney + would be the new streaming home of Doctor who. Fans seemed divided over that news, but the goal of this one is to “transform Doctor who in a global franchise for audiences in the UK and the rest of the world. “Now, a new relationship has emerged that I don’t think will appeal to many fans.
According to a report by The Telegraph, Disney plans to give Doctor who a “Hollywood makeover” when the upcoming 60th anniversary season hits Disney + outside the UK.
It is explained that Disney “will have a say in creative decisions for Doctor who, under the terms of a co-production deal entered into with the BBC for its long-running science fiction series. Anyway, showrunner Russell T. Davies will keep the overall creative vision for the show.
Disney is also looking to give the show a “vast budget beyond the BBC’s means, allowing for more film production values and more stars”. But these higher production budgets are said to be “commercially sensitive and have not been disclosed.”
Now, while some of you may be shocked by this news, just know that the BBC supposedly keeps the last word on the franchise. So if they say no to something, Disney can’t do it. But they both agree on something, Doctor Who’s future will have a much larger budget for storytelling.
by Disney Doctor who reign will begin with the release of the Doctor who Special 60th anniversary offers, coming November 2023. These special offers see David Tennant returning to the franchise as the Fourteenth Doctor. After Tennant played the role of the Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa will take on the role of Fifteenth Doctor.
