There is a direct sequel to the original Cloverfield film that is currently in development with the director Babak Anvari (Wounds) and writer Joe Barton. The project has been in development for a couple of years and today we have an update from Barton on the script and it looks like things are getting closer to production.
Speaking with Variety, Barton confirmed that the final draft of his script is almost done. He also offered more information about his working relationship with the producer JJ Abrams on the film.
“I’m writing it myself, JJ is a producer on it. So I go away and do my drafts and then he gives notes and the Bad Robot executives give notes, and then he’ll pop up every now and then and look at drafts and stuff. I guess probably the next one, because Babak Anvari has just arrived directing, so we are getting closer to production. At the moment I’m doing some revisions and the hope is that this is the last sort of big push to the script, and then we can actually make it happen. “
If you’ve ever wondered why film development takes so long sometimes, it’s like waiting for producers to read the script, offer notes, send it back to the writer, rinse it off and repeat until they have something everyone can agree with. .
There are no details to share about the story to share, but it is likely to explore the aftermath of the monster’s rampage. I also hope it reveals whether the creature survived the US Army’s “Hammer Down Protocol” that razed the city to the ground. Speaking of fan expectations, Barton said:
“I think what we do will be really good. If I didn’t think we had a good idea, I didn’t really think it would go well, then I would be worried. But I’m really excited about the potential of what we’re doing with Cloverfield, and particularly the story we’ve made up. I don’t know, I just think I’d really like to watch it, I think it’s going to be a good movie. People wait with different preconceptions or prejudices or whatever. But all you can do at the end of the day is try to create something really good, and then give it to him and see.
Paramount hasn’t announced a release date or official title for Cloverfield 2 yet, but are you excited about the possibilities it will offer?
