“When I was 18 and in my sixth week of college, I contracted necrotizing fasciitis, a rare and punishing infection that nearly took my life and devastated my entire body.. To avoid the amputation of my left hand and arm, I underwent a grueling invasive surgery and then extensive reconstructive surgery which resulted in a series of skin grafts and scars. “Henley wrote.
He hid the scars professionally
In the post, titled “finally free”the 27-year-old actress explains how she hid these signs for fear that they would prevent her from finding work: “It took me a long time to heal both physically and mentally, but I was hoping someday would be the right time to talk about what happened.. Today is my start. For the past nine years, I’ve been open about my scars in my personal life, but I have completely hidden them in any professional context: I wore bandages to cover them, makeup on set and on stage, long sleeves every time I was photographed, pants to put my hand in my pocket … “.
“The industry that I am part of often focuses on a very narrow idea of what is considered ‘aesthetic perfection’. I was worried that my scars would prevent me from finding a job. The truth is that perfection does not exist, but I still lived with the shame of feeling different, exacerbated by the expectations that arose from the beginning of my career at a young age. But my scars are nothing to be ashamed of. They are a map of the pain my body has endured and, more importantly, a reminder of my survival. They don’t affect my skills as an actress and I’m proud to be someone who has visible scars in this industry.”Henley confesses.
