Tim Burton has a long history with Disney, making big hits like the 1993 Halloween / Christmas phenomenon The nightmare before Christmas; 1996 James and the giant peach; of 2009 Alice in Wonderland and its follow-up from 2016, Alice through the looking glass; of 2012 Frankenweenie; and, most recently, the beautiful live-action remake of the Disney classic Dumbo. Burton’s films have gone well for Disney, but while the director is happy with those projects, he’s pretty sure he won’t be returning to the company for anything in the future.
During a press conference at the Lyon Lumière Festival where he received the prestigious Prix Lumière, Burton talked about his long relationship with Disney, where he began his career as a young animation artist. He suggested that while the occasional, hidden single projects might find a place in the studio, he now focused primarily on the Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars franchises.
“It must be very homogeneous, very consolidated. There is less room for different kinds of things, “he said, adding that he would never make a Marvel movie.” I can only deal with one universe, I cannot deal with a multi-universe.
Burton said it was unlikely he would return to work with Disney anytime after his experiences in his 2019 live-action reboot of. Dumbo.
“My story is that I started out there. I have been hired and fired several times during my career there. The thing about Dumbo, that’s why I think my days with Disney are over, I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was working in this horrible big circus and I needed to escape. That film is quite autobiographical on a certain level ”.
It’s a shame to hear. I like Burton’s interpretation of the Disney films he made. But there is no shortage of other stories to tell and there are many studies that would welcome him with open arms. So this news doesn’t mean he’s gone forever, and it looks like he’s still interested in making his own style of dark and bizarre movies that he’s always had.
