It turns out that when the first cut of Dwayne Johnson’S Black Adam was introduced to MPAA, they ended up slapping him with an R rating. The target was obviously PG-13, but they wanted to push the limits as much as possible with Black Adam’s ruthlessness. They were eventually forced to make some changes to the film to get that PG-13 rating.

During a recent interview with Collider, Black Adam producers Beau Flynn And Hiram Garcia confirmed that the film was originally rated R. Garcia explained:

“We really wanted to make sure we honor the Black Adam character. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and making a Black Adam movie that didn’t have it wouldn’t be authentic. So we always got into this knowing we were going to push it all the way. We knew it was going to be a collaborative process with the MPAA to finally get where we could, to get that rating, but we were able to pull it off. But it was really important for us to do it. And it’s also something Dwayne put a lot of effort into. “

Flynn went on to reveal that it took “four rounds” with the MPAA review committee before they finally granted his PG-13 rating. So, unfortunately, some beautiful and brutal action scenes that ended up on the editing room floor that we may never see. Flynn said:

“We had to make a lot of changes, actually. There are some personal moments that we really love, but we had to let them go. But we never compromised, we never had to shoot a scene. We had some really cool moments, and if you notice there are some great moments where Black Adam is in the flying bike chase sequence and drops one of the intergang soldiers. Then there is this big moment where the truck bounces off the body. But those are moments you need and remember in these movies, do you know what I mean? You can’t play it safe and you have to try. And I think we have four or five. At one point we had about ten and we managed to find a compromise with the MPAA on this. “

In the film, “In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam received the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers to take revenge, he was imprisoned, becoming Black Adam. Almost 5,000 years have passed and Black Adam has passed from man, to myth, to legend. Now released, his unique form of justice, born of anger, is challenged by the modern day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher and Cyclone.

Black Adam even stars Noah Centineo (To all the guys I’ve loved before, Charlie’s Angels) as Atom Smasher; Quintess Swindell (Costume jewelery, Euphoria) as Cyclone; as well as Sara Shahi (Person of interest, The L Word), Marwan Kenzari (The Old Guard, Aladdin), And Uli Latukefu (Young rock), who were chosen for unspecified roles.

Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle cruise) directs Black Adamfrom the most recent screenplay, written by Rory Haines And Sohrab Noshirvani. Adam Sztykiel wrote the previous draft.

Black Adam will be released in theaters on October 21, 2022.
