Nobody knew what the film was going to become and the first film ended up making millions. But the actor who played the iconic Leatherface, Gunnar Hansen, he only earned $ 800 for the film. The cast member only made $ 200 a week
Of course, due to the tight budget, the cast and crew weren’t going to make a lot of money. But the whole experience was much worse due to the difficult filming in the hot Texas summer weather where everyone shared a single bathroom and the meat props rotted on set.
Hanson also had to wear the same costume every day during production and had to work 12 to 16 hours a day. He explained: “I would have earned more if I had worked at McDonald’s for that number of hours.”
It may have been a shit job at the time and it may have paid a lot of money, but in the end the film was a success and is one of the most iconic horror films ever made.
