Manolo Caro (‘Sagrada Familia’): “I never wanted to devote myself to this profession to obey the rules”

Manolo Caro (“La casa dei fiori”) returns to Netflix to present “Sagrada Familia”, a fiction about the different types of motherhood, the family and the feeling of overprotection. “I didn’t want to judge my characters or be politically correct”, the manager says “I never wanted to devote myself to this profession to obey the rules of what we are experiencing”. And this is the main idea of this series: break the barriers to what’s right and what’s wrong when love surrounds everything.

Najwa Nimri (‘Vis a Vis’, ‘La casa de papel’) plays in the ‘Sagrada Familia’ from her usual role of an affable villain, “I always have ungrateful roles and I have to make them pleasant”. Nimri talks about the concept of the mafia that is reflected in the series, “the Italian thing ours, in which the family is a nucleus that does not detach. There is the mafia when crime is shared”. And reflect on the loss of these values, “the world goes towards the nuclei that separate … but in the families there is still something very animal, when the blood is pulling strange things happen …”.

The cast is completed by Carla Campra, Iván Pellicer, Alba Flores, Macarena Gómez, Álex García and Ella Kweku. Everyone feels grateful to keep telling “unacceptable” stories, as Garcia says, because that’s the reason for the profession, “who cares about morals when making art”phrase of Nimri. “If there is something beautiful in our profession, it is that inside the bubble, we are the last space in which you can feel comfortable. Without controversy, or evidence, or thinking about what will happen next”Rico says.

Madrid in the 90s

Caro built a multi-colored universe in 1990s Madrid where there are peacocks on the street and a cast of female characters who are the driving force behind the plot. “I fed on all the mothers in my life, all the women I know and who have understood motherhood in different ways”. But the director makes one thing clear, “No one is better or worse.”

La Sagrada Familia will debut on Netflix on October 14th.
