Here is some interesting information on rights a JRR Tolkien’S The Lord of the Rings. It turns out Netflix offered Tolkien Estate more money for those rights than Amazon, which ended up getting them, which led to the creation of The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power.
According to a profile from The Hollywood Reporter he focuses on The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power showrunner Patrick McKay And JD PayneSome details were shared about how the other streamers attempted to take over Tolkien’s estate.
It was reported that Netflix was willing to spend $ 250 million on the rights The Lord of the Rings, which is what Tolkien’s Estate demanded. But they ended up giving it to Amazon, which paid “tens of millions less”.
So why did they go with Amazon even though they offered less money? According to the report, Amazon’s speech towards them was “a promise of a close relationship that would give the property a creative seat at the table so it could protect Tolkien’s legacy.”
Apparently, it’s that extra level of control that was a big factor in the decision to go with Amazon Prime Video. As for Netflix, their presentation included a Marvel Cinematic Universe-like approach, which would include shows that would specifically focus on characters like Gandalf and Aragorn. That tone is said to have “completely scared the estate”.
In the end, I think the Tolkien Estate made the right decision. It’s nice to know they are involved in the creative process. Also, I seriously doubt Netflix would have committed to a five-season plan that would have cost them over a billion dollars.
What do you think of Tolkien Estate rejecting Netflix for Amazon Prime Video?
