In 2013 it was officially announced that he is a writer and director Michael Dougherty was about to do a sequel to his Halloween horror anthology masterpiece Trick or treat. This is one of my all time favorite Halloween movies, but the long-awaited sequel has yet to be made.
Dougherty recently offered an update on Trick or treat 2 during a panel at Beyond Fest after the screening of the film. He said the film hasn’t got the green light yet, but it’s in “very active development”.
From what I understand, the sequel got the green light in 2013, but for reasons unknown, the film was never made. Hopefully this time, if the film gets the green light again, something will really happen.
Speaking earlier on the sequel, Dougherty said:
“It’s funny because when I first thought about making the first film, I thought,” How cool would it be if we did a series? ” It’s something I remember from childhood. Horror movies and Halloween go hand in hand. And so the idea was, “Well, we could probably do a trick and treat movie every year or every two years, and which would be just a new set of stories and characters. And the common bond between them all would be Sam. “Initially this was the plan, then things changed as the first movie had a weird, very delayed journey. I put those dreams on hold for a while, so it’s nice to go back to the original plan …. I think” That would be fantastic to make a trilogy, at least. So let’s cross our fingers. For me, I think every movie should explore a different aspect of Halloween. I felt like the first movie was the traditional suburban Halloween that we all have some memory of. But as I’ve grown up over the years, I’ve lived everywhere from Columbus, Ohio to New York to Los Angeles, and I find the vacation to be very different depending on where you live. Or even periods of time. Not “I don’t see why we should limit ourselves to today’s stories. Halloween is a fantastic holiday because it evolves depending on where you live and the time period.”
He added: “There’s nothing I can reveal yet. It’s still very early in the process, but I can definitely say we’ll explore Sam more and maybe get into some background of who and what he actually is.”
He went on to explain, “I think we’re going to shake it up a bit. There are different archetypes I’d like to explore, different types of monsters. We’ve talked about werewolves, vampires, and zombies, but there’s a whole slew of different creatures out there that. we haven’t dealt with it, and I think Sam would probably be a good friend. So I think it’s time to let them hang out in the sun. “
Trick or treat is currently out in theaters for the first time in Regal theaters on October 6 and in select locations at AMC Theaters starting October 21!
We can finally share the news! @Mike_Dougherty announced tonight that it is in “active development” with @Legendary on the sequel to TRICK ‘R TREAT and everyone wants it to happen. Get ready for more from Sam. #Trick or treat @Trick or treat @am_cinema pic.twitter.com/9BNEC13ZTg
