We certainly live in a strange and exciting technological age when it comes to making films. Bruce Willis he may have retired from acting, but it looks like we won’t see the last actor. Willis became the first Hollywood star to sell the rights to him to allow the creation of a “digital twin” of himself for use on screen in TV and movies.
That digital twin will be created using deepfake technology. The actor has already starred through this whole thing when he appeared in a telephone commercial without ever being on set. His face was digitally placed on another artist.
Deepcake is the company Willis sold the rights to, and the actor stated this in a statement:
“I liked the precision with which my character turned out. It’s a mini-movie in my usual action comedy genre. For me it is a great opportunity to go back in time. With the advent of modern technology, even when I was on another continent, I was able to communicate, work and participate in filming. It is a very new and interesting experience and I thank all of our team. “
This whole “digital twin” thing is pretty crazy! It will be interesting to see what other actors end up selling their “digital twin” rights. This also means that we may begin to see more and more past stars brought back to life. We have already seen it here and there as in Star Wars franchising. But selling someone’s likeness rights for a “digital twin” to use whenever someone wants … this is a new kind of business.
