Action heroes bordering on or beyond old age. An archetype of character that could practically be considered a sub-genre of cinema in its own right. They are intriguing, they have much deeper internal conflicts than usual, yet they are deadly. This is what Jeff Bridges presents in “The Old Man”, his new series for Disney +. The story follows Dan Chase, a former CIA agent and later state fugitive who comes under the intelligence agency’s radar. His mission is right, but his life has been studded with conspiracies and conspiracies from others to accuse him of death. And now it’s up to him to escape when his body is no longer what it was.
In an exclusive interview for eCartelera, Bridges was honest about that double face that Chase features in the series. A man who must be as strong and lethal as ever, but who is broken inside. “I always have that duality in my life”comments the actor, “I think we are all actors in some way. The ‘The Old Man’ series is actually an adaptation of the book of the same name written by novelist Thomas Perry. Bridges reveals that he knew him and that when he came up with the idea for the series, he thought the format fit perfectly. “I caught up with showrunner and screenwriter, Jonathan E. Steinberg, and Warren Littlefield, the producer, to tell me what they had in mind and who they wanted to bring to the party.”says the interpreter, who did not hesitate to get on the boat, “I was more excited to be involved as the cards were laid out”.
The superhero in us
For Bridges, being an elderly action hero doesn’t matter as much as how we perceive ourselves from within. “We all want to stand out, be special, have a talent that helps humanity”reflect, “and I think, in fact, it is. We are all superheroes”. Continuing with this line of argument, he takes as an example one of the great superheroes of the 21st century, the “Iron Man” of the MCU. Bridges gave birth to the big villain of that movie, in front of which he is full of praise: “I was in what could be the best action movie … Well, maybe not, for sure; the first Marvel movie, ‘Iron Man’, starring Robert Downey Jr., who is a fantastic superhero.”.
