There are many dramas based on real events that expose different cases that have affected the population, but none with a survey involving practically 99% of the population. Now on Netflix you can already see “The Price of Truth” and it tells a story that will make you doubt the use of a material that is as everyday as it is dangerous.
Until recently, this title was found on the Amazon Prime Video platform, but now is now available on Netflix’The Price of Truth ‘, a film based on true events, with Mark Ruffalo, Anne Hathaway and Tim Robbins. The story is directed by Todd Haynes, who picks up an article in the New York Times titled “The Lawyer Who Became DuPont’s Worst Nightmare.”
The story of ‘The price of truth’ is a dramatization of the Robert Billot case (Mark Ruffalo), a lawyer who one day receives a visit from a person who asks him to help him in the case of water contamination that has caused the death of most of his livestock. The investigation leads to DuPont, a chemical factory defended by his law firm.
The environmental lawyer is initially reluctant to initiate an investigation against the company that could jeopardize his career, but when he discovers that the impacts on the Virginia town are so great, the consequences could also be global in scope and decides to do something about it.
The story of Robert Bilott and how he discovered a global case
Robert Bilott finally discovers that in the toxic waste dumped into the state’s water there is a component called PFOA, a chemical agent discovered during World War II, used in the Manhattan Project to create the nuclear bomb, and which is very dangerous. DuPont used it in cookware and cooking products, which ended up poisoning their workers and customers for many years.
The lawyer discovers that in Teflon there is this component called PFOA, i.e. perfluorooctanoic acid, which is used to make Teflon, a material found in all homes with non-stick cookware. DuPont continued to use the compound, even though he knew it caused cancer and “birth defects” as he dumped gallons of toxic waste into the river where the animals drank and where local food grew.
Billot’s discovery has been made public, despite years of research to show that the harmful effects of PFOA have not been disclosed. DuPont has faced more than 3,500 lawsuits, and today the lawyer is still fighting for the company to make good the damage to humanity it has caused for many years.
